How Does the MEAN$ Work?

Step 1: Choose a Career

Students select a career they are interested in.

Each career will provide a salary and a monthly take-home pay.

Students will receive a scenario (e.g., married, single, with kids) to simulate their financial situation.

Students will receive a budget sheet to list their monthly expenses.

Goal: Stay within budget!

Step 2: Make Purchases

Students visit different "stores" to make purchases.

They will decide on housing, transportation, groceries, healthcare, and other monthly expenses.

These expenses reflect the real-life costs adults face each month.

Step 3: "Life Happens!" Wheel

Spin the wheel three times and choose your circumstance.

Unexpected circumstances will arise throughout the game.

These unforeseen events will impact the student’s monthly budget (either adding or taking away money).

Step 4: Track Expenses

Students will log all their expenses on their budget sheet as they go through the game.

Once they’ve visited all the "stores," they’ll add up their total income and expenses.

Additional Notes

All students start with a credit score of 700.

Based on their "Welcome to My Life" scenario, they may have credit card debt, student loan debt, or both.

Some "stores" will require a credit check before making a purchase.

Ah-Ha! Moments

Students will see if they stayed under or went over budget.

This helps them understand that everything has a cost and teaches the importance of managing money.

The game reinforces the importance of living within one's means.
